Steps to practice Yoga Mudrasana (Psychic Union Pose)

Starting Position: Padmasana (Lotus Pose)

Close your eyes while being in Padmasana. Relax the body breathing normally.

  1. Make a fist with the right hand and take the arm behind your back. Hold the wrist of the right hand with the left hand. Take a deep breath.
  2. As you exhale slowly bend the torso in the forward direction, the spine must be straight.
  3. Try to bring the forehead to the floor if possible, don’t force the body. If it’s not possible, try to remain as far as you comfortably can.
  4. Retain the position for a minute or lesser or more according to how comfortable you feel in the final position.
  5. Relax the body. Breath slowly and deeply.
  6. To return, lift the forehead and while inhaling slowly raise the torso to the upright position coming back into Lotus Pose.
  7. Repeat the posture by first interchanging the crossed legs and then arms.

Practicing a backward bending pose such as Matsyasana (Fish Pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) or Ustrasana (Camel Pose) is recommended to be followed by Psychic Union Pose.

Once you have become comfortable practicing Variation 1, form namaste gesture with your hands above the upper back.This requires the good flexibility of the shoulder joints though, so consider practicing more simpler poses first, that helps to improve the flexibility of shoulder joints.

Variation for beginners

Instead of holding the final position, raise and lower the body several times without straining. This variation is also useful for those having a stiff body and hence not being able to touch the forehead to the floor.

Precautions for Yoga Mudrasana (Psychic Union Pose)

  • Practice Yoga Mudrasana only if you are capable of holding padmasana comfortably for 3-5 minutes.
  • Neither remains in the final position for too long nor force to the body to touch the forehead to the floor. Doing so will result in straining back, ankles, knee and thighs.
  • Avoid practicing the Psychic Union Pose if you suffer from high blood pressure, knee or ankle complaints, severe back, eye or heart condition.
